Stay safe
Protect yourself from job scams
Fake overseas job offers cost Ugandan families dearly. Whoever you deal with, including us, watch for these warning signs.
Warning signs
- A “guaranteed” job before anyone has interviewed or screened you.
- Paying cash or mobile money to a personal number instead of the company, with an official receipt.
- Travelling on a tourist or visit visa and being told you can “convert it” to a work permit later.
- Handing over your passport to an agent for “safekeeping”.
- Pressure to pay today because “slots are almost full”.
What to do instead
- Get the details in writing: employer, country, job title, salary and contract length.
- Insist on an official receipt for every payment you make, to anyone.
- Visit the office in person and meet the people you are dealing with.
- Keep your own documents. Give copies, not originals, unless you are at an embassy or official office.
- Talk it through with family before you commit to anything.
